Reinventing Organizations
Self-Managed Success
Reinventing Organizations is a framework for creating and operating organizations that are more adaptive, human-centered, and purpose-driven. Based on extensive research by Frederic Laloux, this model identifies key principles that allow organizations to function with less hierarchy, more autonomy, and deeper alignment with their core mission.
At its core, Reinventing Organizations is built on the idea that organizations evolve alongside human consciousness, and that the most forward-thinking companies today—called “Teal organizations”—operate through three foundational principles:
Self-Management – Instead of relying on rigid hierarchies and centralized decision-making, Teal organizations distribute authority through decentralized teams. Employees have autonomy in their roles, make decisions collectively, and take full responsibility for their contributions. This allows for more adaptability, innovation, and responsiveness to change.
Wholeness – Traditional workplaces often encourage people to present a limited, professional version of themselves, separating emotions, intuition, and deeper purpose from their work. Teal organizations foster environments where individuals can bring their whole selves, including their emotions, creativity, and personal values. Practices such as open dialogue, mindfulness, and personal development are encouraged.
Evolutionary Purpose – Unlike organizations that operate based on rigid long-term plans and financial targets, Teal organizations treat their purpose as something to be discovered and evolved over time. Decisions are guided by an ongoing listening process, allowing the organization to adapt dynamically to its environment, emerging needs, and deeper calling.
This way of working removes many of the inefficiencies of traditional management structures, such as bureaucracy, micromanagement, and disengagement. Instead, teams operate with a high degree of trust, transparency, and collaboration. Decision-making processes such as the advice process (where individuals seek input before acting) and holacracy-inspired structures (a form of Sociocracy, where roles are defined by function rather than rank) help maintain accountability without needing strict control.
Many organizations—ranging from businesses and schools to healthcare institutions and non-profits—have adopted elements of the Reinventing Organizations model to create workplaces that are more sustainable, innovative, and fulfilling. By embracing self-management, wholeness, and purpose-driven evolution, organizations can cultivate a culture where people are engaged, motivated, and empowered to contribute their best work.
